Waking Woods is incredibly imaginative, dynamic, and suspenseful. J.R. McConnery skilfully keeps the reader guessing with every chapter and adds just the right touch of humour, romance, and friendship. The key to a great fantasy novel in my opinion is in the portrayal of its characters and J.R. McConnery is successful in bringing them all to life as real, believable, and relatable. I felt a personal connection with Thomas and Oswell while following their story as they emulate certain personality traits of my own. I really could not wait to get home and keep reading to find out what would be in store for them next. Despite being the first book of a series, Waking Woods jumps into action right away with a strong narrative. I am excited for book two and would highly recommend this novel as I know it will appeal to many readers. It is unique, creative, and a refreshing change of pace from other works of fiction I have read recently. Great stuff!Product details

I thought that this book was well written and had an interesting possibility of an alternate world. I found some of the politics of the other world hard to understand at first. Overall, I grew to care for each of the two main characters. I'm interested to see what happens next!
I don't have a lot of experience reading in the Fantasy genre, but I could hardly put Waking Woods down! The author describes the story as "populated by normal people who are thrown into extraordinary circumstances", which made the characters not only attractive, but also believable! The story begins with a young, typical teenage boy, and throughout the book we are given the opportunity to watch him grow into a hero.
McConnery does a great job developing two strikingly different characters who share (among other things) very similar heroic attributes. He also does a great job getting us to fall in love with both of them equally! I had a difficult time closing the book after each chapter, as I wanted so badly to know how our other hero was faring in their unique storyline. The fact that I cannot say whether I preferred following Oswell in Myros or Thomas on Earth a great asset of Waking Woods. McConnery's characters really capture authentic adolescence and should be relatable to most teens (or people recently departed from their teenaged years).
I'm very much look forward to the next book in the series. There are plenty of storylines (and romantic interests) that are begging to be expanded, and lots of potential for The Courser & Wallace Chronicles!
Great story. What an imagination and what a command of the English language!
Never a dull moment and I can't wait for Volume 2.
I found the story very exciting. I wanted to get to the next chapter to find out what would happen next.
It has a very interesting plot, something I have not seen before.
I like the fact that there is a continuing story, I can't wait for the next book to come out.
This story is fabulous.
It has subtle inferences to some classic tales but the overall concept and the artistry of his writing make this book stand in a world of its own.
Though this volume wraps up cleanly, it still leaves you curious and wanting to delve into the next volume ASAP.
